Motorcycle Safety Report August 2018

The public consultation period is now over following from our Motorcycle Safety Forum and the Road Safety Commission has had over 850 submissions from motorcycle Riders. See the link here-https://www.rsc.wa.gov.au/News-Media/Latest-News/July-2018/Motorcycle-consultation-paper-and-survey-closes-soWe will now await for the wheels of Government to grind to their conclusion.I have also been pushing for some clarity again on motorcycles being allowed to use priority bus lanes that taxis are currently using, this is now with the Road Safety Commission and Public Transport Authority. We have our Vulnerable Road User Advisory Group meeting on September 11th 2018 and I will be asking for updates at this meeting on all the motorcycle actions and for the reestablishment of the Motorcycle Safety Sub-Committee, that has been in suspension for about 18 months so that we can keep up to date with the progress of the 39 actions from the Motorcycle Strategy and have the opportunity to add more actions as needed. I have an opportunity to attend the Australasian Road Safety Conference in Sydney in October as I will be in Sydney at that time, I have attended these conferences for the past 8 years and always get a massive amount of information on motorcycle safety studies and initiatives from many sources both in Australian and overseas. I do however need funding for the conference registration and ask for a motion from the floor and a show of hands to attend this conference. There has recently been a lot of reporting in the media about wire rope barriers following a motorcycle riders fatal crash into the posts of this type of barrier. There has also been for too much quoting from some European sources that these type of wire rope barriers have been banned and removed in some countries. This is simple not true and is a popular myth that suits some people’s views. Some of the comments on social media are comments made by the riders family and European motorcycle rider organisation that where not for publication and have since been removed, it is however extremely upsetting for the family and we all need to think very carefully before making any unsubstantiated comments to anyone but especially to the media. Remember to ride like your life depends on it. Dave Wright
